And a constant forever is that routine of coming home and finding mother and greeting her and then having dinner together was always a great thing. Can you share with us about what its like to be Russell Marion Nelson Jr.? And summer trips to places, whether, if we went in the car or however we got there, again, it was more about being together and strengthening those relationships with each other. Sarah Jane Weaver: Russ, you have a huge opportunity to carry your fathers name, which also sometimes may feel heavy. Were so grateful for that technology that allows us to do that. We were serving in Nauvoo when the sister just older than I am, passed away, Wendy, that was just before they went to Paradise, California. They can feel that he loves them and its not so distant. He was there. And so after they were married, they lived in her home for a little bit. But something that we just did together and had fun doing together. Russell M. Nelson Jr.: Even, a long time ago, I was 14, right after my freshman year of high school, I was the only one at home. Laurie Marsh: You know, nothing that my dad does surprises me, nothing. It also adjusted previous policies forbidding adult males to teach classes of children or youth alone to apply to all adults. Wendy Nelson Maxfield died of cancer in 2019. He said, I never left them. And, and then you look back.

Sarah Jane Weaver: Yeah, Ive heard him say it, too. President Russell M. Sarah Jane Weaver: Well, and I think for so many Latter-day Saints, that sort of hit us when we were reading your fathers gratitude message that he gave a few years ago when hes asking all of us, in the midst of this pandemic, to give thanks. January 13, 2019.

Nelson Jr.: Right after our mom passed away, that was the first time in my life that Id ever seen him visibly sad, or not the cheerful countenance that he usually had for that year plus, after our moms passing. He was set apart as a counselor in the bishopric by Joseph Fielding Smith, whose son-in-law was the bishop. How do you sum up a lifetime of being taught. What was it like for the Nelson children to grow up in a home with a world-famous heart surgeon? Russell M. Nelson Jr.: And so, there was a time I wanted to be a doctor and I think he was kind of proud of that. Gloria Irion: I think he is open to hearing counsel. Hes very driven, very bright and catches on fast. I often think of the Doctrine and Covenants section 6:36, Look unto me in every thought, doubt not fear not, and that is my dad. And thats how they met, I think the play was called Hayfoot Strawfoot. So that was, we liked that play and love that story. So we would spend time together on a family trip. Married to Norman Maxfield, they are the parents of seven children and grandparents to 20. I once saw Russs birth announcement and it had a picture of nine girls on the front and said, Boy, oh, boy. First, the high priests groups at the ward level were dissolved, making all Melchizedek priesthood holders in wards and branches part of the elders quorum. I would say that I know a key part of life is to learn and to grow, to love one another, to love the Lord and enjoy the blessings that come from Him as we keep our covenants.. He later had a practice at the Salt Lake Clinic with admission privileges at LDS Hospital. Yeah, he doesnt believe in it.
And while we were there, he met with some families in this meeting before the devotional. Laurie Marsh: It was a great experience. He focused on the family for sure. But it was fun to feel like you were on a date with your Daddy and got to spend some time with him. Sarah Jane Weaver: And since were on the topic, Im interested in knowing how your father treated your mother. I feel like there was a high level of love in our home. So hes brilliant. Nelson and Oaks filled the vacancies in the Quorum created by the deaths of LeGrand Richards and Mark E. Term ended by removal of apostleship; was later excommunicated. I love the fact that just this year before conflict broke out between Russia and Ukraine in Eastern Europe, he had given a message and directed it to all the Saints in Europe, and told him that the future was bright for the Church in Europe. 1, she said. Russell M. Nelson Jr.: I think one of the things that both of them, and especially our dad was really good at, is teaching us why we do things, less about the how and more about the why. And so, obedience or adherence to rules, laws, whatever came with that understanding of why we were doing it. And you know, wed get our hair wet and hed squirt shampoo on each of our heads and wed shampoo the person in front of us and he called it The shampoo train. And then hed say, About-face! and we turn around and shampoo the person who used to be in back of us is now in front of us. Almost a fishy-smelling string of pearls.
She passed away in February 2005. The tender memory of President Russell M. Nelson as a young father is also reflective of how he has led The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said Laurie Marsh, another daughter. Sarah Jane Weaver: And when I think about your fathers ministry as president of the Church, its sort of compartmentalized for me. What was that like to be raised in a home, did he help with homework? Its just part of who I am and, and the way I was raised. And to see him follow that, like he said, follow instruction, has been a really remarkable thing to see and witness, so close. Sometimes, it was keeping Daddy from sleeping. He committed it. And so I know, for myself, that I didnt want to break the rules, because I didnt want to disappoint them. During that period, the Latter-day Saint Prophet has embarked on a fast-paced global ministry that has taken him to 35 countries, guided the Church through a pandemic, extended many invitations and continued to oversee the ongoing restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
And so a lot of his column dinner table comments and conversations that weve had, I see them now coming through in some of these adjustments, in these teachings, that this isnt a church for the people here in Utah or Idaho or Arizona or the United States. Is there something that you have learned from observing his Church leadership? Gloria Irion: We were so grateful for the technology thats available. And thats the way theyve been with everyone that joined our family, whether it was after our sister passed away and a new mother would come in for these kids. An example I know a lot of us have shared with each other is doing taxes at the end of the year. And it takes time, you know, we cant have everything, right that very minute. I mean, we have a firsthand experience and perspective in watching someone be prepared. Committed children of the covenant remain steadfast, even in the midst of adversity. And, Gloria, lets start with you. We just need to be a child of God and we all are. And so really, that part is not different. Laurie Marsh: I have to mention, because to me, its his biggest life is his focus on the Savior. The Nelsons have nine daughters, and then one son so your memories of him would be a little different.
